Sarawak's Wild Flora

Sarawak's Wild Flora

On the island of Borneo lies Sarawak, home to one of the world's most biodiverse tropical rainforests. Its warm climate and year-round rainfall support an extraordinary variety of flowering plants, towering trees, orchids, and native fruits.

A Rainforest Filled with Plant Life

Sarawak's forests contain more than 10,000 species of vascular plants, including approximately 3,000 tree species and over 1,700 orchid species. About 34% of its flowering plants are believed to be found nowhere else in the world.

From the forest floor to the highest canopy, plants grow at every level. Some produce large, dramatic flowers, while others have blooms so small that they are easily overlooked.

Remarkable Flowers of Sarawak

Sarawak is home to around 25 species of Nepenthes, commonly known as pitcher plants. These unusual carnivorous plants have pitcher-shaped leaves that trap insects and allow them to survive in nutrient-poor soil.

The rainforest is also home to the Rafflesia, which produces the world's largest individual flower. Its distinctive scent attracts the insects that help pollinate it.

More than 1,700 orchid species add to Sarawak's floral diversity. Their wide range of shapes, colors, sizes, and scents reflects the remarkable variety found throughout the rainforest.

Towering Trees and Native Plants

Dipterocarp trees dominate much of Sarawak's lowland rainforest. These tall trees form a dense canopy and help create the conditions needed for countless flowering plants, vines, and shrubs to thrive below.

Native plants and fruits such as Sarawak dabai, terung asam, and Terap Sibuti are also part of the region's natural and cultural heritage. Some have received Geographical Indication recognition because of their close connection to Sarawak.

Among this rich plant life, orangutans move through the forest canopy while hornbills fly between towering trees—two enduring symbols of Borneo's rainforests.

Where Wild Flora Meets the Honey

With flowering plants blooming throughout the year, stingless bees can forage across an extraordinary variety of wild flora. Their small size allows them to visit tiny flowers that larger honey bees may not be able to access.

The nectar collected from this diverse landscape helps shape the honey's flavor, aroma, color, and natural composition. This gives Sarawak stingless bee honey its distinctive sweet-and-sour taste and unique rainforest character.

Natharvest Stingless Bee Honey is sourced from small-scale farmers in Sarawak, bringing the remarkable floral diversity of Borneo's tropical rainforest to every jar.
