Raw from the Rainforest
Natharvest Stingless Bee Honey comes from Meliponini, a species of stingless bees native to the tropics. It's also known as Miel de Melipona, and it's produced, stored, and harvested differently than the honey most people grow up with.
Regular honey — the kind found in most grocery stores — comes from Apis mellifera, the western honey bee. Stingless bee honey is a different species, a different process, and a different result: a naturally sweet-and-sour honey with a thinner, lighter texture and a flavor profile all its own.
What Makes Stingless Bee Honey Different
- Low sugar, low glycemic impact. This honey contains no sucrose and has a lower total sugar content than regular honey. Its primary sugar is trehalulose — a low-GI sugar with slow release, avoiding the rapid blood sugar spikes associated with conventional sweeteners.
- Contains trehalulose. Researchers at the University of Queensland identified trehalulose as a major naturally occurring sugar in stingless bee honey, representing 13% to 44% of its composition — making it the first known food identified with trehalulose as a major component. Studies have noted its slower rate of digestion compared to conventional sugars.
- Naturally tooth-friendly. Trehalulose is acariogenic — it doesn't feed the oral bacteria that cause cavities, a rare trait among natural sweeteners.
- Naturally rich in bioactive compounds. This honey naturally contains sugars, organic acids, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and other bioactive substances — including gallic acid, caffeic acid, coumaric acid, and ferulic acid — that give it its antioxidant activity. Research has found antioxidant levels up to 45% higher than normal honey, with darker batches generally showing more phenolic content and antioxidant activity.
- Slower to crystallize. Compared with regular honey, this honey has a thinner consistency and crystallizes more slowly.
- A distinct taste. Naturally sweet-and-sour, tangy — more complex than the one-note sweetness of regular honey.
- Higher moisture content. Stingless bee honey is lighter and thinner than western honey.
- 100% pure. Nothing added. No sucrose, no additives, no preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors — just raw honey as the bees made it.
Rare by Nature
Unlike mass-produced honey, stingless bee honey is small-batch by nature. Because stingless bees produce far smaller quantities of honey than western honey bees, researchers have noted that it is naturally rarer and more labor-intensive to harvest than conventional honey.
- Scarce by nature. A western honeybee hive yields 40–60 lbs of honey a year. A stingless bee hive yields less than 1 lb.
- Harvested by hand. Stingless bees store honey in small resin pots, not wax combs, so it can't be spun out in a centrifuge. Beekeepers extract it pot by pot using a gentle suction device — slow, careful work.
- No large-scale farming. Stingless bees can't survive cold climates and aren't native to the US. There's no known large-scale commercial farming of stingless bee honey in any part of the world — it comes only from small producers in tropical regions.
Sourced from Borneo Rainforests
Our honey is harvested from the tropical rainforests of Sarawak, on the island of Borneo — one of the most biodiverse regions on earth, where flowering plants bloom year-round. The bees forage across wild flora, and that diversity shapes the honey's taste and aroma.
The hives are built from wax, resin, and plant material into small storage pots rather than combs — part of what gives this honey its naturally tangy character.
For Your Overall Wellness
Take one teaspoon a day, straight from the spoon, as part of your daily routine to support your overall wellness.
Tip: Avoid mixing it into boiling water — high heat can affect the honey's natural qualities.
